Sprint Sierra Aircard 250U : Error 720 : How to Fix

If you are getting Error 720 when you try to connect to Sprint’s 3g network on a Sierra Aircard 250U USB modem, then don’t worry- here’s how to fix it.

Problem: When you click connect in Sprint’s utility you get Error 720.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the TCP/IP protocol has become unbound from the

dial-up adapter, or if a conflict is created when a second WAN Miniport IP

device driver loads.”

Fix: (Thanks to harrisb on Lenovo’s forums: source)

Step 1: Uninstall the WAN Miniport (IP) and WAN Miniport (PPTP)

You’ll have to modify the registry in this step so make sure you back it up. (To restore, double click your exported file) – More info about the registry

To resolve this issue, uninstall the WAN Miniport IP and PPTP devices.

To do so, follow these steps:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

3. On the View menu, click Show hidden devices.

4. Under Network adapters, you will see WAN Miniport IP

devices. If a WAN Miniport IP device is listed, continue to the

following step. If no WAN Miniport IP device is listed, go directly

to step 16.

5. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.”

Use regedit at your own risk (if you mess up, you may need to reinstall windows!)

6. Locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-

08002BE10318}

7. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, type backup-key in

the File name box, and then click Save.

Note You can restore the changes that you make to this registry key. To do

so, double-click the backup-key.reg file that you saved [but do not do so now]

8. Click each of the registry subkeys under this key, and then view the Data

column of the DriverDesc value to determine which of the subkeys

corresponds to WAN Miniport (IP). For example, the 0005 subkey.

9. Right-click the subkey whose DriverDesc value data is WAN Miniport (IP) or

WAN Minport (PPTP); (for example, right-click 0005), and then click

Delete. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the key.

10. Quit Registry Editor.

11. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

12. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

13. On the View menu, click Show hidden devices.

14. Under Network adapters, right-click WAN Miniport (IP) and then click

Uninstall. Click OK to confirm that you want to remove this device.

15. Repeat for the WAN Miniport (PPTP).

Step 2: Reinstall the WAN Miniports

1. Find netrasa.inf in c:\windows\inf

2. Make a copy of the file and name it netrasa.inf.save

3. Open the original copy of netrasa.inf and place a semicolon

in front of the line that starts "Excludefromselect=\" and

and continue with all following lines and then end with

"MS_NdisWanNbfIn,MS_NdisWanNbfOut" under the [ControlFlags]

section. (all lines between)”

Step 3:

1. Start a Add new hardware session (from Control Panel) and choose

that the hardware is already installed. Choose to "Add New Hardware"

and then select "Network Adapters" followed by "Microsoft" and then

both the PPTP and the IP Wan miniport one at a time.

(NO need to reboot between these steps)

2. After you finish both then reboot.

3. Select Start -> Run and type: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

(For details, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357)

4. Reboot and try your connection.

5. Delete the modified netrasa.inf and rename the original (which was saved as netrasa.inf.save) back to netrasa.inf

That’s it. Worked perfectly on my T60. Hope this helps, visit the source for more detail.

Mac Updates

Its been a long time since I last posted on here. Last summer I bought a new Macbook Pro laptop. I’ve been using it a lot ever since, dual-monitoring with my 24” Syncmaster. Following this post will be many about my favorite Mac Applications. From GTD software to Media Players to Alarm Clocks, I’ve spent a lot of time finding the best Mac Applications for a given task.

Let’s start with alarm clocks. I frequently use a computer alarm clock because they are loud, and can be hooked up to even louder speakers easily. Also, it is more difficult to turn off my computer alarm clock in my sleep, than it is hit the snooze button or flip a switch on traditional alarms. A login screen blocking my unconscious self from stopping my alarm goes a long way to making me wake up. I’ve found two alarm clocks that I think are really the best for Mac.

First is Awaken – Embraceware Software Inc

First off, this isn’t free software. Its got a 10 day trial, or you can buy it for $10 Canadian, which is about 9.4 USD as of this post.

Features

Awaken allows you to set multiple alarms that can wake you on specific dates and times, or general days of the week and times. For example, you can set it to wake you up on 7/18/2010 at 8:00 AM, or you can set it up to wake you up on Sundays at 8:00. Of course you can select multiple days for an alarm if you want to wake up at the same time for multiple days. In addition, when the alarm rings, you can set Awaken to launch any item of your choice easily. I imagine this could be useful for opening a news website to read after waking, or your calendar to remind you want you have planned for the day.

Perhaps the best feature about computer alarm clocks, and a feature of Awaken, is that it allows you to play your own music as the alarm tone, instead of some generic shrill sound. You need iTunes 6.0 or higher, and you can set it to play specific songs, or specific playlists. Awaken also features built in sounds that will play in case iTunes fails when it is supposed to play. This is a good feature seldom seen in other programs I have used.

Lastly, you can authorize Awaken to wake your Mac when its time to set of an alarm. This way, you can sleep your Mac over night and save battery, instead of keeping it on the whole time.

Some other features I do not use, but may be to useful to you:

Support for Apple Remote – Control the alarm across the room

Egg Timer – one time alarms

Podcast support

Fullscreen Alarm

Easy Wake – Music gets louder and louder.

Awaken – http://embraceware.com/awaken/

Embraceware Software Inc.

$10 CAD

Second, we have Alarm Clock 2 – Robbie Hanson

Alarm Clock has some pretty important differences over Awaken. The first of which is, that it is completely free. You can get Alarm Clock 2 from Robbie Hanson’s website: http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/index.html

Alarm Clock 2 can also play music and playlists from your iTunes library just like Awaken, supports Apple Remote, has Easy wake,  and can wake your Mac from sleep. You can set a one time alarm, or a repeating alarm on certain days of the week, just like Awaken. It also has a Timer (just like the Egg Timer), and a Stopwatch.

What it does not have, is a GUI that rests in the Dock. Instead it has an icon in the Menubar from which you can open windows that allow you to set alarms and change your preferences. When your alarm rings, a semi-transparent box comes up with the time and a Stop and Snooze button. Personally, I think this is a very good thing. Alarm Clock 2 doesn’t take up valuable Dock real estate, and stays out of your way until you want it to ring. The alarm screen is simple, but nice.

FREE

While both programs are good, Alarm Clock 2 will do everything you want it to do, and will not cost you anything. The only thing I’d say Awaken has over Alarm Clock 2 is looks, and an iPhone application ($1.99) that will be able to sync alarms with Mac in the future.

mIRC, a quick startup guide. General Use, Downloading, Customization…

mIRC Edited logoSo, you have finally found IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and realize that it owns. Its a place where there is always some to talk to, all kinds of topics, and a great place to download files (especially for BitTorrent haters). You might have already found out how to join a server and maybe even how to join a channel…or not. Anyway, I’ve already found IRC and am writing this article to help people on their way to learning how to use it. I’m sure there are all kinds of guides out there for IRC, but I intend to write this one to contain just everything that you will probably use and not all the extra commands. So, lets get started!

.:The Client:.

Ok, first you are going to need a client. I guess you might already have one and all, but considering that you don’t really know how to use IRC yet, you probably don’t know if that client really is any good or not. Thus, it really shouldn’t matter if I make you download another one really quick will it? In my opinion, a great client would be mIRC. It is the most popular client used today in the channel, and has great features. But before you go rush on to Google to download the client, just know that doing this will give you a program without any great add-ons or anything. Then you get to go out everywhere, and try to find the best ones to dl and blah blah blah. Instead, lets just get mIRC with the SysReset script. Here is a link for the full package of SysReset: http://download.sysreset.com/sysreset255.exe

Basically, SysReset has file server capabilities and add-ons for helping you run your own channel, using fancy brackets, handling private messages, and Winamp functions(show playing song and more). It is also the most popular script, making it easier to get help when you don’t know how to do something.

On the Next page, we’ll start with General Use.

Crysis officially released

crysis released Well, today is the 14th soo…according to the EA page Crysis is out.

Man Admits to Hijacking PCs for Profit

According to Dailytech.com

With the online alias "Acid" or, in other cases "Acid Storm", a man named John Schiefer admitted to "infecting and hijacking more than 250,000 PCs with malware so he could have access to PayPal records." The man "is the first person to be accused by the U.S. government under the federal wire tapping law of operating a botnet — a network of hijacked computers."

Schiefer was hired by multiple clients to service PCs, but ended up installing malicious code designed to steal usernames and passwords for online banking accounts.

And then…

Schiefer recently agreed to plead guilty to four counts of fraud and wiretap charges that could send him to federal prison for 60 years with fines up to $1.75 million USD according to the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney’s office.

Looking for top-quality digital entertainment for the whole family? We’ve got age-appropriate games and entertainment for every member of the family.

Yeah, there a family friendly version of the Xbox 360 now. It comes with a wireless controller, and, as you can see in the picture above, a new low price: $279.

Key Note: It doesn’t come with a hard drive, just 256 MB of storage. It does come with 5 family-oriented games, including, "PAC-MAN Championship Edition," Luxor 2" and "Uno."

Comments are Cool.

An E-”Will you marry me?” [over xbl]

She said yes.

This news is a bit old, but I thought I’d post it anyway.

A guy with the gamertag Moviesign made a map in Halo 3 and set up what his girlfriend thought was just going to be a 2v2 match. After starting the game, he led her to a spot where he claimed he left an energy sword. “Instead there was a nice top-down view where he had spelled out a proposal in weapons. He then asked her to be his teammate for life.”-Xbox Website

That’s pretty awesome. Would it be mean to put this in my “strange” category?

"Click to Activate" Extra Step in IE gone

Here’s some good news for all the people that still use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer! That “Click to Activate” button at the top of your browsing window… is now gone! “YAY!” says Admin. Oh wait, I don’t use firefox. W/E

Microsoft announced that it has licensed technology from Eolas that allows this to occur automatically, and thus, the new patch eliminates the “Extra Step”.

According to CNET and the IE Blog, this will be available with the Internet Explorer Automatic Component Activation Preview Patch (available on Microsoft download site in early December), and when the IE Cumulative Update releases in April 2008.

Key Note: The update will not affect the way pages work, nor will developers and designers need to make any adjustment to the way they build their pages

Also…

This was announced in 2006… and Microsoft is still making their users wait…yay for ms

Making everything match (Windows Theme Modification & Websites)

(Click Pic for better view)GoogleDarkIf you have downloaded and installed a visual style for windows, you have probably went out seeking to make as much stuff match on your computer to that theme as possible. For example, if you have downloaded a dark theme, you probably want (but not necessarily ) a dark wallpaper to go with it. Or, you could get something to contrast it. Whatever the case, this little tutorial should help you take this desire to coordinate to the next level.

.:Get a matching FireFox theme:.

Before I begin, if you do not have FireFox, get it, and then make sure you follow this tutorial: Speeding Up Firefox

Now, an Internet browser is probably what you use most on your computer, so getting a good theme for it makes perfect sense. You can find themes for firefox here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:2

Note: My personal favorite that goes along with the dark theme I have installed: NASA Night Launch

Now, we can take it to the next level: making pages you commonly visit match your theme.

.:Making webpages match:.

  1. First, go ahead and download the FireFox plugin, Stylish.
  2. After you have installed the plugin, and have restarted FireFox…
go to a page that you wish to change.
  3. Right click on the Stylish icon in the bottom right-hand corner of firefox(see picture, at http://images.xnr.be/68db967f0cafe3c99e40f70813c50881.png)

  4. Click on Find Styles for This Page.
  5. Click on some of the links and if you like it, press load into stylish. If you download one, and then don’t like it, go into the Manage Styles menu of Stylish. You can either delete it entirely with the delete key, or disable it buy selecting it, pressing the edit button, and Unchecking the enabled box.
  6. Now go to that webpage, and you’ll see it has been changed.
  7. NOTE: if you install some for Gmail, they will probably only work if you use the “Old Version” of Gmail. (As soon as you sign in, at the top there is a button for this)

.:Recommendations:.

Since I’m using a dark theme, I like all the dark ones…

You will notice that many of these are more for “improving” a site, rather than making it look better. This is especially helpful when you want to remove some nasty ads on a site you frequent.
